Wedgwood Cricket Club have seen an explosion of interest in their newly formed women’s section which was only started in the last 18 months. In that time they have gone from a handful of women and girls to fielding 2 teams in the most recent competition which is taking place at Sir Stanley Matthews Academy!
This is all part of a national drive to get more women and girls into the game of Cricket, but Wedgwood in particular have had amazing success in just a short time. Since its inception the club have established weekly women only training sessions, both indoor and outdoor, entered girls only teams into local tournaments, have a female club president, established an ladies online kit store, hosted their own women’s tournament and established a ladies Cricket committee.
Ladies Head Coach Carl Copeland had this to say “The women and girls section has really taken off with little marketing on our part. We have a great bunch of ladies aged 14 to 70 and provide a welcoming environment that is safe, fun and caters for all abilities. That’s in addition to the large number of girls we see in the junior section, there is a huge appetite for the game out there”
The Ladies section secured sponsorship from a local firm of female solicitors, Gent Law. The firm have been instrumental in allowing the club to scale up so quickly, providing funds for shirts and equipment and supporting the development both on and off the field.
The hard work is really paying off as the club now boasts 2 girls who represent Staffordshire.
